Throughout the ages, female patrons have used art as a crucial form of expression. A place where power can be generated and passions can be explored. Where artist have been nurtured and supported and unique collections built. These women were the taste makers of their day – so important in the story of art history that one wonders whether for this series we should term it ‘matronage’ as opposed to ‘patronage’ (deriving after all from ‘pater’, meaning father).
This six-part series celebrates the women behind the artists. From ancient Pharoah Queen Hatshepsut to Catherine the Great, Isabelle d’Este to Peggy Guggenheim, Rose Balston will explore the lives of these incredible women who drove art history forward.
All lectures are pre-recorded. 2023 series (running Jan-March, Sept-Nov) will be released at 12:30pm GMT on Wednesdays via Zoom Webinars. They will be available to watch on catch-up via Tixoom. All series include a 2-week mid-term break.
