Having achieved a Masters degree in History of Art at Glasgow University, Alan spent many years working in the art world, ultimately as a specialist in contemporary art at an international auction house.
More recently he returned to academia to complete a Masters degree in Classical Civilisation, followed by a PhD in which he studied eighteenth-century attitudes towards ancient Rome.
He continues to write on contemporary art for auction houses and galleries. Currently working on a book which will be published by Edinburgh University Press in 2020, his areas of interest span the ancient world, modern receptions of the classics and art and architecture across the centuries.
Alan was recently elected a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.
