Everywhere you turn in Westminster, stories of the British Royal family pervade. We’ll start at the National Portrait Gallery to introduce you to some key characters from British history before heading down Whitehall. Here we will go inside and wonder at Inigo Jones’s iconic Banqueting House with its awe-inspiring ceiling painted by Rubens. It is also where poor King Charles I lost his head. Time for a quick drink in one of London’s oldest drinking spots to fortify us for our next stop, the Houses of Parliament, where we’ll unravel dastardly plots and politics from gunpowder to Brexit.
Cue Westminster Abbey and its atmospheric daily Evensong. Not only a grand and glorious place of worship, but also the final resting place of royals, nobility, literary greats, composers and scientists who have made massive contributions to Britain’s history and culture.
Jumping on a private speedboat we’ll finish the day by travelling down the Thames to the oldest and once most feared building in town – The Tower of London where three Queens of England lost their heads. After meeting a Yeoman Warder (AKA Beefeaters) we’ll have champagne and canapes over a private view of the glittering Crown Jewels.
